Supporting characters like Toad, Donkey Kong, or Yoshi have their own fantastic titles that could help inform their roles in the big-screen adaptation. In doing this research, the Illumination production team should not ignore Yoshi’s craft world.
It’s another example of the number of types of visual perspectives in this universe and the different settings that movies could explore. While the MacGuffin-centric plot is as straightforward as other Nintendo titles, the stylized choices made here by Good-Feel and the heroic little character development for Yoshi could certainly be used elsewhere.
Paper Mario: The Origami King (2020)
Each slice of paper mario essentially takes up the classic components and the clichés of a mario game and adds his own style to them. One of the most recent releases in the series from Intelligent Systems, The king of origami expands the concept further than many might have expected.
His story is really exciting as the heroic Mario is embarked on another adventure, but if the movie wanted to at least reference the series, then a version of Paper Mario wouldn’t hurt. After all, it would be a meta shift to suddenly have a number of sticker 2D characters running across the screen in a game-like transformation sequence.
Super Mario Bros. (1985)
Die-hard fans know enough about Super Mario Bros. to know that the release of this name is one of the most defining pieces in the history of video games. It was the episode that solidified the franchise and demonstrated that there was so much potential for this fictional world.
Side-scrolling is nothing short of exceptional and has helped display elements that have continued to appear in video games ever since. The NES release should be Illumination’s starting point to build their movie as it contains the essential how-to. mario what it is.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018)
It may seem unlikely that the Bandai NAMCO and Nintendo title will make its way to the screen, but Super Smash Bros Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch is the best designed iteration of this brawling concept. Mario and his roster of heroes and villains are an integral part of the title.
Crossovers of this scale are all the rage in cinemas right now, so why can’t Nintendo do something similar? It is plausible that as a small Easter egg, a Smash Bros. a reference is included so that if these franchises become more successful, a similar narrative can be presented in theaters.
