Dawson saw flames on the stove and they spread to the cupboards as thick black smoke filled the house, sheriff officials said.

Dawson yelled at anyone who may have been in the house, but no one answered.

However, as Dawson walked to the front of the house, he observed the bathroom light on and made further announcements through the front door, but still got no response. officials said.

Dawson then walked around the back of the house and entered the patio through an unlocked screen door, where he spotted movement in the master bedroom bed, according to the sheriff’s office.

Dawson then found the little boy hiding under blankets, officials said. Dawson rescued the child and took him out of the house, officials said.

The toddler received medical attention and was cleared at the scene.

Sheriff’s deputies said the boy’s father went to get dinner and left the child asleep at home with an older brother. Authorities did not say where the older brother was when the 3-year-old was rescued.

“Without DFC Dawson immediately running into danger, even without a safety respirator, it could have been a very different outcome,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said. “This child was in hiding out of fear of fire and smoke while watching a cartoon on his phone when luckily DFC Dawson’s emergency response training allowed him to find and rescue this child to safety. It was a dangerous situation and we are very proud of the courage and commitment of DFC Dawson to serve this community and save a life.

No one was hurt.

The fire was said to have been accidental and possibly related to the cooking, officials said.
