The booster dose side effects of the Pfizer and Moderna coronavirus vaccines are similar to what was reported after the second dose, according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The to study found “no unexpected pattern of adverse effects after an additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine” and that most of the reported side effects were mild or moderate.
He analyzed investigations from a voluntary safety monitoring system from mid-August to mid-September – a period when booster doses were only allowed in people with compromised immune systems. The Food and Drug Administration and the CDC approved expanded use of the Pfizer booster dose last week.
CDC director Rochelle Walensky said the study shows that “booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are so far well tolerated.”

“The frequency and type of side effects were similar to those seen after the second doses of the vaccine and were mostly mild or moderate and of short duration,” Walensky said at a press conference.
About 79% of people receiving a third dose reported local reactions such as pain at the injection site, compared with almost 78% of people after the second dose.
The study also found that 74% of people reported systemic reactions like headache or fever after a third dose, compared to 76% of people after the second dose.
The results focused on those who had received the three injections of Pfizer or Moderna. The Biden administration’s recall plan currently only applies to Pfizer beneficiaries, although U.S. health officials plan to expand eligibility to include those who have received the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines.
