Child’s play Creator Don Mancini revealed his inspiration to do the Chucky the tv show came from Bryan fuller‘s Annibal series featuring Mads Mikkelsen. Speaking to Bloody Disgusting about the Killer Doll’s journey from theaters to television, Mancini pointed out how Hannibal showed him that a great movie franchise could be reinvented on television, which ultimately led him to create the Chucky series.

While Mancini is best known for creating the Child’s play franchise, the writer has also worked for other horror shows, such as Tales from the Crypt, Zero string, and Annibal. According to Mancini, during the time he spent with the crew of Annibal, he had the idea of transporting Chucky from cinema to television. Developed by Fuller for NBC, Annibal was inspired by Thomas harris‘characters from novels, especially cannibalistic physician Hannibal Lecter (Mikkelsen) and FBI Special Investigator Will Graham (Hugh dancy). Although these characters were already widely known due to the success of the original novels, the film franchise starring Anthony hopkins As a killer, the series has made its own way to acclaim from critics and audiences alike.

Annibal successfully reinvented characters beloved by audiences, which led Mancini to question the potential of television in storytelling. As Mancini explains, Annibal:

“It was an established film and literary franchise that had now caught on on TV, but with a very specific take on Bryan Fuller. When I worked on this show, one of the things that was so exciting about it subject was that it sounded like fanfiction made by experts. (…) If you are a fan of something like this, like me, you spend time fantasizing about it. How would Hannibal have been in practice? What would it have been like to have been a patient of Hannibal Lecter? I think that was a fundamental draw to this show. Directing the show was Bryan bringing his own incredible talent and vision, but also talents and the genuine enthusiasm and fan boyishness and fan girlishness of seven or eight like-minded Hannibal fanatics.

At this point, Mancini began to wonder how he could conjure up the same energy in his own Child’s Play franchise. In Mancini’s words:

“I realized that if I did this with my own franchise, we could do something really amazing. Because Bryan had done it with Annibal. It was the initial inspiration to bring Chucky on TV, when I was working on Annibal. “

Chucky serves as a sequel to the seventh film of the Child’s play franchise Cult of Chucky, released in 2017. The series brought back many classic characters from the franchise, such as Alex vincent‘s Andy, the original child tormented by the killer puppet in the first film, and Christine elise mccarthy reprising her role as Andy’s adopted sister.
