Notes on U.S. Stamps by John M. Hotchner

The December cartoon contest stamp, the 1959 4¢ Oregon State Commemorative (Scott 1124), features a covered wagon, but there are no animals to move it. Several contest entries offered explanations.

Patricia Maki of Neillsville, Wis., suggested a title, “USPS Unveils New Design for Mail Transport; asks for an increase in the budget to finance the oxen.

Spike Savage of Près Isle, Maine, offered the wife’s thoughts to her husband: “I knew 40¢ for those beefs wasn’t a bargain. Now we’re stuck here on the plains, and no, I’m not gonna push this while you shoot.

Mildred Barylski of Warrenton, Va., took a different approach: “Dang! My two horses are lame. Where’s Triple-A when you need it? “

Several contest participants commented on the performance of the Postal Service.

Greg Svoboda of Peoria, Illinois offered, “I know PMG DeJoy wants to slow down mail delivery to save money, but that’s ridiculous!” Of course, the question heard most often on family trips was mentioned in multiple entries. The earliest of these was by Robert Dernedde of West Linn, Oregon, “Are We There Yet?”

Edgar Dunlap of Gainesville, Ga., wins the non-philatelic portion of the contest with an entry that combines an old adage with stamp design.

On the philatelic side, the winner is Marshall Lew of South Pasadena, Calif., who came up with another title, “Bulletin: USPS Awarded 10-Year Contract to Build New Generation of U.S.-Built Delivery Vehicles with almost no carbon footprint.”

The two winners will receive a 13-week subscription to by Linn (a new subscription or an extension). Here is the best of the other finalists:

“Sixty-three years ago, 4¢ carried a first-class letter. Can you believe it’s almost 60¢ now? by Mary Lou Moseley of Owensboro, Ky.

“From Mount Hood to Statehood, everything is good in the hood. …” by Dale Stout of Colorado Springs, Colo.

“Wow! Look at that snowy peak! Mom, did you bring the skis? sent by Gordon Trotter from Sarasota, Florida.

“Do you think this view makes our rear too big?” by John Gaffney of Exton, Pennsylvania.

“Why is it always, circle the wagons; Can’t we square them just once? sent by Richard Wolf of Westminster, Maryland.

“It is terribly hot today. Do you mind if I lower the roof? by Steve Kotler of San Francisco, California.

Thank you and a tip of the hat to everyone who participated. The next competition will be announced in the February 14 issue of by Linn.
