Disney is bringing its own original film adaptation of Diary of a weakling child to their Disney + streaming service in December. A trailer has been released that features all the mischief, embarrassment, and the typical dreaded college life of Greg Heffley. It will be an animated feature film in the original art style of the book it is based on.

Here’s the official synopsis: Greg Heffley is a lean but ambitious kid with an active imagination and big plans to become rich and famous – he must survive college first. To make matters worse, Rowley, Greg’s adorable best friend, seems to go through life and succeed at everything without even trying! As the details of his hilarious – and often disastrous – attempts to fit in fill the pages of his journal, Greg learns to appreciate true friends and the satisfaction that comes with standing up for what’s right.

The Disney film will be based on the first book of the Diary of a weakling child series of books by author and designer Jeff Kinney. The series has been successful since the first release of an online version in 2004, garnering a live-action film adaptation of the series in 2010 and three subsequent sequels and a short film thereafter.

The trailer features fresh, animated visuals that seem straight out of the original books. It gives the audience a taste of the animation, which is based entirely on the famous style of illustration from Kinney’s books. From the meeting of Greg and Rowley to the famous “cheese touch” sequence, moments, characters and scenarios from the school book are translated directly from the page to the screen.

Diary of a Wimpy Child is directed by Swinton Scott and written and produced by Kinney. Vocal talents include: Brady Noon (The Mighty Ducks: game changers) like Greg Heffley, Ethan William Childress (mixed) like Rowley Jefferson, and Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley) like Frank Heffley.

Disney’s animated film adaptation has the charm of the bestselling book series. The coming-of-age movie will be released on Disney + on December 3.
