At first glance it may seem that Superman is stuck in limbo, but there are actually a few Man of Steel-centric projects in the works. For a character so important to the world of comics and pop culture in general, he is indeed lacking in Superman movies and shows, especially when compared to Batman and even previously lesser-known DC and Marvel heroes. Nailing down what should be the pinnacle of the superhero ideal isn’t an easy task, which helps explain why. Superman projects often take longer than usual.

For example, after Superman IV: The Quest for Peacethe last of the Christopher Reeves Superman movies, it took 19 years for another live-action Superman the movie is coming. The Return of Supermanwhich was to serve as a sequel to Superman 2, had a budget of $204 million and only made $391 million at the box office, a clear sign that Superman was a tough character, at least for the big screen. Several years later, Zack Snyder Steel man rebooted the character and brought in Henry Cavill as Superman.

That said, there is Superman movies and shows outside of the DCEU in various stages of development, both live-action and animated. Here is a breakdown of each of them.

JJ Abrams Superman

In February 2021, Warner Bros. announced that JJ Abrams is producing a new standalone Superman movie that would have no connection with the DCEU. Academic and novelist Ta-Nehisi Coates, who has worked on comic book titles such as Captain America and Black Panther, was chosen to write the screenplay. A few months later, THR reported that JJ Abrams would not be directing the film but would instead serve as producer. Also according to THR, the search for the new Superman actor had already begun. Michael B. Jordan’s Superman HBO Max Show

Val-Zod Superman and Michael B Jordan

Before JJ Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates Superman movie was announced, there was already talk of Michael B. Jordan to play the Man of Steel. In fact, Michael B. Jordan was even asked if he was going to play the lead role in the JJ Abrams movie. Despite Jordan’s negative, the actor is involved in another Superman project. Jordan produces a Superman limited series for HBO Max, one that will star Val-Zod, not Kal-El, as the Man of Steel. The screenplay is reportedly written by Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters, and it’s not yet known if Michael B. Jordan will also star as Val-Zod or just serve as producer.

Val-Zod was introduced to DC Comics in 2014 as part of a reimagined Earth-2. In this parallel universe, he was born to unknown parents (presumably the son of General Zod) and was adopted by Jor-El and Lara, parents of Kal-El. As in other iterations, Earth-2’s Krypton was doomed, leading to Val-Zod, Kal-El, and Kara Zor-El being sent to planet Earth. Val-Zod’s ship, however, arrived years after the other two. Therefore, by the time he had finally learned to control his powers, Clark Kent had already died at the hands of Steppenwolf, beginning Val-Zod’s time as Superman.

Either way, as DC begins to dive into the multiverse in live-action, it’s rather fitting that Earth-2’s Superman gets his own show. Besides the Val-Zod project, Michael B. Jordan also produces a Static shock movie for HBO Max.

My Adventures with Superman
