Epic Games is considering a Fortnite film as a project for its entertainment division. According to Eurogamer, The Independent, a Fortnite movie has “already been discussed” at Epic.
The site’s sources say Epic is exploring new ways to grow its brands at a time when its mobile gaming ambitions are limited by its legal battles with Apple and Google.
Fortnite is an online video game developed by Epic Games and released in 2017. It comes in three distinct game mode versions which otherwise share the same general gameplay and game engine: Fortnite: Save the world, a hybrid tower defense-shoot-survival cooperative game for up to four players to fight zombie-like creatures and defend objects with traps and fortifications they can build.
The development surfaced as three of LucasFilm’s top employees joined Epic Games earlier this year. Former vice president of physical production at the film studio, Jason McGatlin is now president of Epic’s special projects division.
McGatlin was an executive producer on all of the Disney Star Wars films. Other former LucasFilm employees include Lynn Bartsch, head of commercial affairs, and Chris Furia, vice president of production finance. Epic Games apparently sees the creation of a Fortnite movie as a way to strengthen its entertainment division.
Currently Fortnite as a game hosts several popular characters from many movies and TV shows, as well as massive live events. Details regarding the Fortnite movie are not known. It is not clear whether the film will be live-action or animated, and Epic has not shared any information on the plot, cast, and creative team.
Fortnite is currently hosting its Halloween-themed Fortnitemares 2021 event.
