Frisson Films has announced the release of its fully animated short, “The Desert and the Sea”. The short will air for free on Frisson’s social media on January 3, 2022 at 9 a.m. ET.
In 2021, the film was selected as Best Animation at the Albuquerque Film & Music Experience (AFMX) and features the visual work of Joe Bradford and Nadine Picard.
Based on chalk drawings and Picard’s poetry, “Le Désert et la Mer†tells the story of a lonely desert dreaming of its love, the sea. The desert sends its sands in search of it and together they build an island.
Frisson Films took over the project after a friend of the organization, Carole Rouffet shared her late mother’s works with the team. The film interweaves Picard’s original designs with Bradford’s animation.
Regarding the genesis of the film, Frisson co-founder and award-winning soprano Elyse Anne Kakacek said in the press release: “Carole has been a vocal student and a friend of mine for a few years. I knew her mother was an artist, but when she shared this chalk art and poetry book with me, I was blown away. I brought it to my partner, a composer, and asked him if he would be interested in setting it to music.
The composer, Nathaniel Adams, wrote the music in the style of a French art song for five a cappella voices.
“When I sat down to read Nadine’s work, words jumped off the page,†Adams said in the press release, “The simultaneous brevity and passion of her poetry and the beauty of the French language made from this text an absolute dream to be defined with music. “
Featured singers include Kakacek as soloist, Katie Seiler, Tomas Cruz, Nathaniel Adams and Jared Gravely.
Frisson Films began as an informal collective when filmmaker Ryan Rivard teamed up with Kakacek to create their first film, “L’Eraclito Amorosoâ€. The association has since produced four short films, “The Desert and the Sea” representing the sixth of Frisson.
