In November, a signed piece donated by Glenn Chadbourne of Newcastle will be auctioned as part of the Bath Area Family YMCA’s Forever Grateful online auction event.

The auction will run from November 1-12, and supporters of the Bath-Area YMCA will have the opportunity to bid on “fun and unique items,” according to the organization’s website.

Funds raised from the auction will support programs that make the Y accessible to everyone, regardless of income, such as swimming lessons, the Veggie Van mobile meal service and child care for busy families.

Described as “inimitable and devilishly talented” by Stephen King, Chadbourne has illustrated countless stories, many of which are King’s, over the years. He started working with the superstar novelist in 2005.

Chadbourne was also the Lincoln County News editorial cartoonist for over 30 years.

Much of Chadbourne’s art has a macabre side to it, something that has served him well in portraying the “king” of horror. However, the artist describes the auction piece as a “whimsical pumpkin jamboree”, which shows its “softer, more fuzzy side.”

The piece was somewhat inspired by the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest, for which Chadbourne is known to decorate a giant man-eating pumpkin outside King Eider’s Pub.

Wanting to use his art to ‘pay forward’ during a difficult time for many across the county and country, Chadbourne contacted his friend Charlie Ault, site manager for Bath Y’s Landing, and asked him to find a way to use his works of art to raise funds for the programs of the Y.

Chadbourne also printed a number of 11-by-14-inch copies of the coin and signed them to be sold at Mike’s Place on Route 1 in Newcastle for $ 10 apiece.

After selling his prints, he plans to “gag a few clams” for charity, according to his Facebook page.

While this will be the first time Chadbourne has donated a copy for a charity auction, it won’t be the last as he plans to continue donating original signed pieces to nonprofits.
