Love and Thunder opens with $143 million at the box office

0

Thor: Love and Thunder will mark the third-biggest box office opening of the year and the biggest ever for a Thor film. Marvel Studios’ latest film will gross $143 million in its first three days at the domestic box office, matching domestic projections, albeit at the lower end. Together with the international transport of the film, this is enough to recoup its considerable production budget. The total is a career opening for director Taika Waititi as well as Natalie Portman, who returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Jane Foster, now with the power of Thor (Portman’s best prequel was Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith with $108 million, a movie Waititi forgot she appeared in). Opening ranks behind only Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ $187.4 million opening and Jurassic World Dominion$145 million in 2022.

Thor: Love and Thunder received mixed reviews from critics. Jenna Anderson of ComicBook.com gives the film a rating of 3.5 out of 5. In her review, she writes:

Thor: Love and Thunder is definitely a change of pace, whether from Thor: Ragnarok, the MCU’s Phase Four, or even the greatest tapestry of superhero adaptations. The film’s heartfelt, reverential core feels perfect for its crop of characters and for the current cultural moment, but that perfection is hampered by bizarre structural choices and inconsistent CGI. Sometimes this mess just adds to the charm of love and thunder and its flawed crop of characters, but that prevents the film from becoming another game-changing entry within the MCU. Fortunately, just enough Thor: Love and Thunder manages to charm and delight — especially its stellar ensemble cast — to always make it a worthy callback.

Also at the box office this weekend, Minions: The Rise of Gru continues to perform well. The animated film will cross $200 million this weekend. The full list of this weekend’s top 10 box office movies follows.
