Earlier this year, we reviewed the fantastic animated film The spine of the night, and I found it spectacular. The film received acclaim on its 2021 South by Southwest Film Festival debut for its stylized animation and impressive vocal cast. (Being violent enough didn’t hurt either.) Luckily, it has a distributor and will hit theaters through RLJE Films later this month. If you want to stay safeDon’t worry, it’s also coming same day in digital HD and on demand.
Written and directed by Morgan Galen King and Philip Gelatt, the film sees Tzod, a witch voiced by Lucy Lawless, find an ancient flower on top of a snow-capped mountain. Described as the “last light of the gods”, the flower has incredible power, and its keeper (Richard E. Grant) will kill anyone stupid enough to make a game of it. Instead of violence, however, Tzod regales the Guardian of the Flower with her life story, which also spans different generations, heroes and villains.
There is a parcel happens in the trailer above, and it all looks pretty striking. Instead of the typical CG Where anime artistic styles that we have become accustomed to for animation in recent years, Spine is rotoscope and looks like something you would see late at night on Adult Swim. It makes the bloodshed and the dramatic moments all the more powerful, and the most fantastical moments all the more horrifying. And with a voice cast that also includes Patton Oswalt, Betty Gabriel and Joe Manganiello, Spine maybe just a movie that you will end up loving if you get the chance to see it.
The spine of the night will be released in theaters, on demand, and in digital HD on October 29.
