Paramount + confirms the renewal of Rugrats season 2. The original Rugrats The series first premiered over 30 years ago on August 11, 1991, instantly becoming a groundbreaking phenomenon that would spawn countless merchandise and three blockbuster theatrical releases. Following the adventures of Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica, Susie and Phil and Lil, the series became entrenched in pop culture throughout its nine seasons. During its time, the original series won four Daytime Emmy Awards, six Kids’ Choice Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Paramount + first brought the series back in May 2021 with five episodes that rebooted the original story. While the Rugrats reboot shares some similarities with the original show, there are a few key differences. Perhaps the biggest change comes from the character of Betty DeVille, who was originally described as a strong feminist with a “weaker” husband named Howard. In the Rugrats reboot, Betty is now described as a lesbian and Howard is nowhere to be found. Another change comes in the form of Grandfather Lou, who was originally described as a former WWII “greater generation” grandfather. Grandpa Lou in the reboot is now described as a baby boomer-era hippie with a braided ponytail. Nonetheless, the reboot still taps into the imaginations of babies as they navigate the world around them.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the original show, Paramount + has just announced the renewal of Rugrats season 2 for 13 additional episodes, which will air in the United States, Latin America, Australia and Canada. Paramount + programming director Tanya Giles confirmed the renewal, saying: “we can’t wait to bring even more adventures with Tommy, Chuckie, Angelica and the rest of the Rugrats. In addition, Ramsey Naito, President of Nickelodeon Animation, added the following statement regarding Rugrats season 2:

“This next season of RUGRATS will delve even deeper into the secret lives of babies and their unsuspecting parents, while continuing to highlight core themes of friendship and family. For 30 years, Rugrats have found echoed with fans around the world and we can ‘Don’t wait to keep telling original and fresh stories with these beloved characters.’

Rugrats - Susie & Kids

While the Rugrats reboot is a reimagining of the original series with colorful CG animation, it still follows the same pint-sized and extremely imaginative perspective of the classic ’90s show. a variety of imaginative situations, capturing the spirit of the original series. The next eight episodes of the first season, which are scheduled to air on October 7, would feature the babies defeating a “space villain”, Participating in a mission to get Angelica out of preschool and a half-hour Halloween special involving a werewolf. Just like season 1, Rugrats Season 2 will once again feature the surviving voice actors of the original series’ titular characters.

The Rugrats reboot serves as the second Nickelodeon CGI animated series for Paramount + and it looks like with the announcement of a second season, the streaming service is finding success with the shows. While the reboot is aimed more at a younger audience rather than Gen Z looking for nostalgic thrills, the series is watched enough to warrant another episode of episodes. Although there is no saying when Rugrats Season 2 is coming out, fans can at least look forward to the release of all eight episodes of the first season next month.
