Star Trek: Prodigy Timeline Explained – How Is Janeway Already A Hologram?

It’s by design. The Hagemans want the characters to learn more about the Federation and Starfleet, which begins to happen in the second episode. Still, if you’ve been a longtime fan of the franchise, there are actually Easter Eggs lurking prominently in the pilot. Zero the Medusan and Jankom the Tellarite are the two of exotic species that were presented for the first time in the T & Cs. Although we have seen the Tellarites a decent amount on Discovery, the Medusans only appeared in one CGU episode, the famous banger from the third season, “Is There In Truth, No Beauty”, in which Spock rocks the IDIC pin and those red space shades.

“We combed through the entire universe and found some really interesting things that we thought were under-exploited,” said Kevin Hageman. “Because you know, Trek covered the Klingons really well, let’s say. So we weren’t going to make the Klingons our main villain. But on the other hand, Klingons are an important species, so we definitely want to introduce Klingons to our young audience. Without saying too much!

One thing the pilot of Prodigy introduced to all viewers is a training hologram version of Captain Kathryn Janeway, voiced by Kate Mulgrew, reprising her role for the first time since Traveler ended in 2001, and since his brief appearance as Admiral Janeway in Star Trek Nemesis in 2002. But, if Janeway was turned into a training hologram, when does this wacky new Trek even take place? Physically, the show takes place in the Delta Quadrant, but what year is it? The answer is, Prodigy arrives in the year 2383; five years after the end of Traveler, about a year after the last season of Lower decks, and very close to the first flashback of Picard, in 2385. Meaning, Prodigy is stuck in a specific part of the barrel. And, apparently, five years after bringing Traveler at home, and accepting promotion to the rank of admiral in Nemesis, it looks like Janeway has accepted having her personality and likeness turned into a training hologram. It means that our Janeway is still there. The Janeway hologram didn’t replace it, there is now (at least) of them of her. The precedent for this is quite simple. In the DS9 episode, “Doctor Bashir, I presume?” We met Dr. Zimmerman, the human upon which the emergency medical hologram was based. Now, it seems the same is true for a Janeway-based training hologram.

Bottom line: in Prodigy, all these Star Trek rules matter. “We wanted to make sure our show wasn’t part of a cartoon mirror universe,” Kevin Hageman said. “We know that we are in the area Picard. We chatted with their showrunners about what they do. Make sure everything works together. There are events in Picard it will greatly affect our young characters.

While it is not clear how events on the other side of the galaxy will impact the characters in the Protostar, it has been made clear that Robert Beltran is also reprising his role as Chakotay from Traveler. Interestingly, this is also around the same time that Seven of Nine likely joins the Fenris Rangers in Picard. As Prodigy expands, it could shed new light on what may become the interesting decade of the 24th century, the 2380s. Why are so many events clustered here? What else could be happening? For the first time, Star Trek will answer these questions from a new angle. For the first time in Trek history, the crew of a new ship knows less about Star Trek than the Trekkies.
