HOLLYWOOD — “Minions: The Rise of Gru” is an origin story about how the young villain allied himself with the adorable little yellow creatures.

Steve Carell once again lends his voice to Gru, although as we go back in time he plays Gru at 11 3/4. Carell has been part of this franchise since the beginning. He says he had no idea the servants would become so beloved.

“I mean, I loved the concept. I loved the script. But when I saw the final product, I thought they were onto something here. It’s special, it was different,” Carell said. “In the script, you know, the minions run out of the room or the minions yell, you know, there. It’s all gibberish. So I didn’t have a clue what they were or what they were looked like or how they sounded. And they described them to me and I thought, ‘Okay, well, good luck with that. It’s, you know, maybe the ones that get cut, if it doesn’t work.” And, you know, that’s the biggest part of the movie.”

So even after all these years with his little yellow friends, can Carell actually understand minions?

“No, no, but I’m not a kid,” Carell said. “And I think kids can understand minions a lot better than parents.”

Moms and dads might also recognize the members of “Vicious 6,” voiced by Taraji P. Henson, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, and Danny Trejo. You’ll also hear Michelle Yeoh as “Master Chow,” who teaches the minions martial arts.

“Minions: The Rise of Gru” hits theaters July 1. It is rated PG.
