It’s something he hid for over 20 years.
For the film’s director, Jonas Poher Rasmussen, who co-wrote the film with the man who lived through it, “Flee” became a project that spanned nearly a decade.
“We were friends when we were teenagers and he arrived one day from Afghanistan in my small Danish hometown on his own and stayed in foster care with a family around the corner. And already at that time, I was curious about his story. But he didn’t want to talk about it,” Rasmussen said. “I knew it was rare to do an animated documentary. But it really started with a conversation between me and a friend in my living room. And we didn’t think it would be a feature film. So it’s like being here after nine years, it’s just crazy.”
“He has this perspective going back 20 years and then to today to really understand being a refugee and the cost of it, and the history of Afghanistan,” said the producer Monica Hellstrom.
We’ll see how “Flee” fares on Sunday, March 27 at the Oscars.
