The trailer does indeed appear to have condemnations, fanaticism, and monsters galore! But what is the countdown to the dead? The webtoon synopsis sheds some light:
One day you will receive a message from an unknown sender. The message will only include your name, the fact that you will go to hell and the time you have left to live. When time counts down to zero, supernatural beings show up to doom you to hell. In the midst of social chaos and growing hysteria, the people must find a way to survive this inexplicable terror.
You don’t have to have devoured the webtoon to see that Yeon Sang-ho is here fully in his element. Social chaos and heartbreaking life and death decisions are tossed into a high-altitude mixer. It is exactly the magic that made a fairly simple zombie image, “Train to Busan”, a wall bump that thrills and devastates in equal measure. The director’s past credits include “The Peninsula” and the animated prequel to “Busan”, “Seoul Station”.
Other intrigues can be found with the cult element. As anyone who has lived in North America can tell you, in times of desperation there will always be those who will attribute tragedies and catastrophes (like an uprising of spinning beasts) only to bad behavior: if you are suffering it is because you have done something wrong, you have not been faithful enough, you are not good enough, and whatever happens to you is deserved punishment. It’s a wisdom chestnut that was good enough for the likes of Mrs. Carmody in “The Mist”, and for the likes of Bev Keane in “Midnight Mass” by Mike Flanagan.
They were of course Bad News Bears, weren’t they?
So it’s not hard to guess the trajectory of anyone near the Masked Believers shown in the trailer. The only question left is if they get theirs the way Carmody and Keane did.
