5 locations for future seasons of What If?

What if? is such an interesting show for Marvel because it allows them to do … pretty much anything. The whole concept of the show is to present crazy “what if” storylines involving heroes and villains from the MCU, and put the characters in situations they would never normally find themselves in. The animation medium also gives the creative team a lot of freedom, as animation allows for more wacky situations and action sets than would be possible in a live show.

Due to the very nature of What if?, there are basically endless possibilities as to where the show might go in future seasons. It would be nice to see a season that is just an anthology, and not all of them connected like the first season was, because they could really branch out with it. Each scenario takes an MCU story that has already been told and asks, “What would have happened if a different choice had been made, or if x thing hadn’t happened at all?” There are so many different storylines the show could explore in the future, and here are just five ideas on what some of them might be.

Hela-Flashback-Thor-Ragnarok

the appearance of Hela in Thor: Ragnarok was certainly great, and she quickly turned out to be one of the most powerful villains the MCU has seen to date. Her story, however, is one of the most interesting parts of her character. She was the firstborn of Odin and Frigga and was by Odin’s side through all the conquests that led to Asgard being the great power that she is. However, Odin eventually realized that peace was a better way to rule and tried to get Hela to comply. When she didn’t want him and she was attempting to take the throne by a violent coup, he imprisoned her in Hel and wiped her out of all records in Asgard, to the point that her other children did not know her.

But what if it hadn’t happened? This story concept could go a number of different ways. Maybe the scenario is that Odin never learned peace, and he and Hela continued to rule violently. What would Thor and Loki have looked like? What impact would this have on the outcome of the Thor movies? Alternatively, Hela might succeed in taking Odin’s throne and ruling Asgard instead. Maybe at this point Thor and Loki are in the game and need to find a way to overthrow her and restore peace to the kingdom. Asgardian mythology in the MCU movies has always been interesting, and it would be just great to see more of it. What if?

Young Loki Sylvie Cailey Fleming

Speaking of Asgard, it would be interesting to see another multiverse version of it – namely, one where Sylvie is not VAT ripped off and lives the rest of her life on Asgard. It takes a few levels of depth, as Sylvie is already a version of Loki from a different universe, and this pitch would explore another alternate version of Sylvie. Due to how VAT works, there might not even be a timeline in which it is not taken from its original hourly flow, but What if? likes to bypass some of the pre-made MCU rules, so there is a possibility that this will happen.

This episode would essentially answer the question of why Sylvie was taken off her timeline in the first place. What was there in his future that deserved to be pruned? If the mistake was simply that she was born as a girl, the TVA surely would have carved her out sooner. Some fans have speculated that because young Sylvie plays with Valkyrie dolls, she would have grown up to be a hero rather than a villain, which made her a variation. It would be cool to see a What if? This episode confirms this and shows what Sylvie’s life would have been like if she hadn’t had to run away from VAT.

It is a popular What if? pitch among fans, and also just an interesting thought experiment in itself. In this universe, everyone who was Blipped in the original MCU timeline survived Thanos’ snap and now must face the fallout. Could they have found a solution to reverse the Blip without certain characters like Tony Stark to understand the elements of time travel? And what would Wanda have looked like in her immediate grief over the fallout from the Blip?

It would also mean Thanos was among the 50% who were Blipped, meaning they wouldn’t have to find him, but would the Infinity Stones disappear with him? This whole concept would just give some of the characters in the MCU who aren’t the original Avengers some time to shine and show that they’re just as capable of saving the world (which would be a good message to get into the phase. 4, where most of the original six Avengers aren’t present).

bucky tony civil war

This concept would keep the most important What if? recurring gag, which involves the death of Tony Stark (seriously, he dies in every episode of the series he appears in). In this version of events, Bucky kills Tony at one point during Civil war, either during their initial confrontation when put into Winter Soldier mode, or during the fight at the end of the movie after Tony finds out who killed his parents. This last option would above all create lasting tensions that it would be interesting to explore.

How would that change Steve and Bucky’s relationship? Steve has stood up for Bucky through everything so far, but he could end the murder of someone Steve is friends with (even though they’d spent the whole movie fighting). And what are the implications for the rest of the MCU without Tony? Again, he wouldn’t be there to figure out time travel, or to perform the last world-saving snap-in. End of Game. This concept is a bit simpler, but it could be an interesting character study and have some sort of spy thriller if Bucky has to run away from all the Avengers again.

Loki the avengers

Now, this concept might not be for everyone, but it’s not a totally crazy idea. There is a classic trope on TV to have a musical episode, and that would give Marvel a perfect opportunity to play with that trope. A lot of MCU actors can sing along, and it would be so much fun to have them perform songs in character. The idea is just that in this particular universe, everything is still musical (there is no need to have the “a different choice changes everything” motif for this episode). This would recall the Phineas and Ferb episode “Rollercoaster: The Musical!”, where they revisit the events of the first episode, but make it a musical this time.

They could do this with any movie (or combine a few into one), but The Avengers in particular, it looks like a good movie to turn into a musical play, as it’s kind of a classic within the Marvel pantheon. It just feels like a big story that could still work with songs, and the original film is just campy enough that a musical version doesn’t feel totally out of place. And just think, Loki would get an absolutely epic villain number!
