A new clip from a highly anticipated fantasy series, you say? Surely there will be dragons involved? Or a great magical threat of the proportions of the end of the world? At the very least, an action-packed battle to the death ?! None of these are impossible, really – plenty of battles await viewers in future episodes of the series – but the first clip for “The Legend of Vox Machina” forgoes any epic stakes for exactly the kind of moment. wacky team that helped build the huge fan base.

The motley group of adventurers are put on their heels when they encounter an obstacle so complex that it stops their journey in its tracks: a locked door. Who needs a villain or a crucial story when something as simple as a lock can bring out this personality-packed crew? We first meet the gnome bard Scanlan Shorthalt (Sam Riegel), who begins by singing one of his famous improvised songs. The innuendo-filled little ditty fails to magically charm the open door, but will at least make a wonderful addition to the series’ soundtrack. Keyleth (Marisha Ray), a half-elf druid, also takes a magical approach, but it’s much less spirit than … fire. When that, too, fails, Gnomish Priest Pike Trickfoot (Ashley Johnson) has attempted to uncover the magical nature behind the gate only to find that it is not arcane in nature – or as half-elf ranger Vex’ahlia puts it ( Laura Bailey), “It’s just a fucking door!”

The half-elf thug Vax’ildan (Liam O’Brien) is the only one capable of meeting the locked door challenge – that is, the only one sane enough to simply pick the lock. Understandably, with this dramatic nonsense falling apart, barbarian goliath Grog Strongjaw (Travis Willingham) is comfortably settled in his own little world, eating a delicious sandwich. The locked door is the perfect obstacle to introduce our team of heroes, bring out their personalities, show off their special skills, and hint at the success of their future problem-solving attempts. Critical Role fans will also note a few missing voices, including Taliesin Jaffe, who plays bandmate and gunslinger Percy de Rolo; and World Creator / Dungeon Master, Matthew Mercer, who will play Sylas Briarwood, among others,

“The Legend of Vox Machina” unites the many creators of Critical Role with writer Jennifer Muro (“Star Wars: Forces of Destiny”) and Emmy-winning artist, host and designer Phil Bourassa (“Young Justice” ).

The series arrives exclusively on Prime Video on January 28, 2022.
